Applying Business Architecture

Overview
Course 432 - 2 Days

Companies have problems aligning business goals with IT development. Management talks in terms of business goals, models and processes; IT talks in terms of technology solutions. Result: Capability gap caused by the time it takes to translate business requirements into IT system solutions. A new approach is needed to make the link between business objectives and IT needs. This link is provided by a common architecture. Rules for constructing and governing the business at the process, people and organizational levels are aligned from the start with the rules governing IT structures and standards. This new approach involves focusing on a single, unifying, overarching concept - the Business Architecture

Some of the benefits of a Business Architecture Model:

  • Rapid extensions to the business model; adding new capabilities and speedy integration of new acquisitions
  • Remove artificial distinction between business and IT planning
  • Optimum use of IT investment
  • Easier to justify IT investment in terms of business needs
  • Avoid producing IT systems which are expensively over-specified, or unable to serve new demands and urgent business needs

Business Architecture is a dynamic model of the business

  • Focuses on the key processes and structures in the business at the appropriate level of abstraction
  • Represents a consensus view among the people operating the business
  • Adapts easily to changes and extensions
  • Is easy to understand and fosters communication among the different stakeholders of the business
  • Integrates with IT Enterprise Architecture and it is one of the main drivers for Enterprise Architecture Planning
