There are different factors which compete with one another
when analyzing what, if any, training you need. Technology changes
so quickly and keeping pace is a job in itself. At the same
time, few can afford to be away from work for the time it takes
to learn everything we need to in a classroom, even when those
skills are critical to our work.
Until now, most training companies would have you believe
that it was a choice between Instructor Led Training (ILT)
or web based training (WBT). A catch-22. Almost any training
expert will tell you that ILT provides a superior learning
experience. Yet, it is also much more expensive and requires
time away from work and in some cases, even travel. At the
same time, WBT, though cost-effective, has shown decidely
mixed results. It requires a good deal of self-motivation.
There is no expert present to clear up areas you don't understand;
there is no group interaction which facilitates learning.
And most important, e-learning requires that we set time aside
in our already busy days. The flexibility can be a hindrance
without the proper top management support.
So what is the solution? First, treat time as the most
precious resource. Don't sacrifice quality. Combine
the best of instructor led training with web based training.
There is at present no learning alternative which is better
than a class led by a good instructor. At the same time, we
get the most out of our time in the classroom by carrying
out preparatory work beforehand. Students enter the classroom
with some foundation and quickly get up to speed. Following
the course, every student has individual access
to an expert mentor for those questions that arise
during application of the course concepts. This is customized,
